Sauna Stone Care: So What Can You Put On The Heater?

If you own a traditional sauna, you will know that the heater and its stones are at the heart of the experience. They store and release the heat, can create steam and are the corner 'stone' of the relaxing environment you bought your sauna for. But did you know that using the wrong substances on your sauna stones can damage your heater, reduce efficiency, and even become a safety risk?

In this guide, we will share what you can and can’t put on sauna stones, along with essential sauna maintenance tips to keep your wellness space in tip top condition.

What You Can Put on Sauna Stones

  • Clean water (soft or filtered if possible)
The safest and most traditional option. Pouring water carefully over the stones produces steam (known as löyly in Finnish culture) and raises the humidity, enhancing your sauna session.
  • Diluted essential oils
Adding a few drops of sauna-safe oils into a bucket of water can create a soothing aroma. Always dilute first, never pour oils directly onto the stones.
  • Ice or snow (in moderation)
A fun way to create a refreshing heat contrast, especially in colder months. As long as the heater is hot, ice or snow will vaporise safely.

What You Should Never Put on Sauna Stones

  • Undiluted essential oils
These can ignite, leave residue, and damage your sauna stones and heater.
  • Alcohol or flammable liquids
Extremely dangerous and a serious fire risk.
  • Salt water
Corrosive to metal heating elements and can shorten the lifespan of your sauna heater.
  • Sugary drinks, beer, or other liquids
Leave sticky residue, cause unpleasant smells, and harm the stones.
  • Solid items like food, herbs, or leaves
While they might seem “natural,” they smoulder, block airflow, and reduce the efficiency of your sauna heater.

Sauna Stone Maintenance Tips

  • Always use sauna-grade stones recommended for your heater. Decorative or garden stones can crack or even explode under high heat.
  • Pour water slowly and evenly to avoid thermal shock that may cause stones to split.
  • Re-stack or replace sauna stones every 12–24 months, depending on how often you use your sauna. Fresh stones ensure good airflow and consistent heating.
  • Book a professional sauna service to keep your heater and controls working safely and efficiently.
